I was sitting in the car with Kelsey this morning waiting for the bus and she asked me if I ever get bored at home all day by myself. I laughed and assured her that I hadn’t been bored since having children!
Then I went on to explain that no matter how much “time” I have on my hands (like I really have any – should I list all of the things that I, other Moms / Women do all day long!!!!) I could never be bored because I love to learn. I showed her the quote I posted yesterday, after all that’s why I’m posting them, and told her how fortunate she was to have already mastered this best life lesson. All of you love to learn, but for Kelsey, like my Grandpa Yager, and like me, it’s part of who she is.
As I told her, and have told you all before, if you love to learn your life will always be exciting and interesting and you can never be bored except by choice. A love of reading goes hand in hand with a love of learning and fortunately all of you love to read. I always have two or three or four books I’m reading at a time, and although we all like different types of books and literature, we all share a love of it! You could spend an entire lifetime reading and not even make a dent in all of the amazing books that have ever been written, let alone all of the not so good ones!
There is a lot more to developing a love of learning but as parents both your Dad and I do our best to model it for you, whether it’s reading, watching educational shows, learning a new sport or developing a new skill, learning a new language or traveling to a new country, experimenting with a new recipe or learning how to grow our garden better. We also encourage you to experiment, to make mistakes, find the answers to questions for yourselves, get excited when you figure something out, figure out what you love, what you’re good at, and learn even more about it.
The point is, there are many ways to develop a love of learning, but one sure fire way is to develop a love of reading. As I told Kelsey this morning, I could never be bored, because there is always another book to read!
Here are just a few more quotes to inspire your love of learning!
“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.” – Henry Ford
“A mind that has been stretched will never return to its original dimension.” – Albert Einstein (I LOVE this one!)
School, formal education, is one way to learn and how you spend much of your time as a child and young adult, so you may as well enjoy it, embrace it and love to learn! Remember, however, that there are many other ways to learn and that everything can be a learning opportunity . . . .
“Wisdom [ ] can be broken down into the strengths of curiosity, love of learning, judgment, originality, social intelligence, and perspective.” Martin E.P. Seligman, Ph.D., Authentic Happiness
p.s. There is a lot more to talk about, but for today, remember that loving to read is part of loving to learn – and that Loving to Learn is part of Creating Your Best Life!!!
“You don’t always have to love what you’re learning, but loving to learn makes life easier, more exciting, and makes you more interesting, well-rounded and successful!” – Mom
