You used to love The Magic School Bus when you were little. Kelsey, you would get up extra early for school (pre-school) just so you could watch it at 6:30 in the morning (before TIVO and DVRs!). Ms. Frizzle’s quote, “Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!” began our first discussions about taking risks and making mistakes and getting messy, literally, in the process!
Mistakes are learning opportunities, but it didn’t matter how many times I told you that, when you heard “Ms. Frizzle” say it, you believed it! On the show, and in the books, the children made lots of mistakes and their teacher celebrated them and the risk taking that created them. Such a simple concept, but so powerful for little minds.
While the chances you take, the mistakes you make, and the ‘messy’ you get has evolved over the years, the basic idea, that simple idea remains strong. To this day, at least a few times a week, one or more of you still quote Ms. Frizzle when someone is wondering whether to try something new, or worrying how it will turn out, I’ll hear, often from the other room, a sweet yet strong voice tell a sister, “Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!”
Keep taking chances and living life boldly, with passion and to the fullest. Make mistakes and get messy in the process. Go where no one has gone before (I’ve got to get Star Trek in here somewhere!!!).
p.s. Dear girls for another time, but for now, here is one of my favorite songs about taking chances, one that you girls love, a song Lee Ann Womack sings called “I Hope you Dance.” Whenever you need a little inspiration about taking chances and living with the wonder of a child, listen to this song . . .
